Netflix Announce ‘Nicolas Cage’s History Of Swear Words’… As If This Year Couldn’t Get More Weird…

by Dave Elliott

Just when you thought 2020 was done with weird surprises, Netflix announces Nicolas Cage’s History Of Swear Words, premiering January 2021 on the streaming service.

The six-episode will feature the star of films such as ‘The Rock’ and ‘Con-Air’ (and former Bath, Somerset resident) giving you the history lesson you didn’t know you needed… Each 20-min episode will dive into the origins, pop culture usage, science and cultural impact of swear words, such as “f*ck,” “sh*t,” “b*tch,” “d*ck,” “p*ssy” and “damn,” as Cage conducts interviews with historians, comedians and experts in etymology and pop culture.

On the expert side, you have people such as cognitive scientist and author of What The F, Benjamin Bergen, linguist Anne Charity Hudley, Professor of Feminist Studies Mireille Miller-Young, film critic Elvis Mitchell, author of Holy Sh*t: A Brief History of Swearing, Melissa Mohr, and author of Word By Word, Kory Stamper. On the comedy side, you’ll have people such as Joel Kim Booster, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, Nikki Glaser, Patti Harrison, London Hughes, Jim Jefferies, Zainab Johnson, Nick Offerman, Sarah Silverman, Baron Vaughn, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

The series is produced by Funny or Die and B17 Entertainment, with Bellamie Blackstone (‘I Love You, America’, ‘@midnight’) serving as the showrunner and exec producer. Additional EPs include Mike Farah, Joe Farrell and Beth Belew for Funny Or Die and Brien Meagher and Rhett Bachner for B17 Entertainment.

Cage is set to take on a new major TV role next year for rival streamer Amazon, when he will play Joe Exotic, made famous by Netflix’s ‘Tiger King’, in a scripted dramatisation based around the bonkers story of the infamous former tiger-owner. He’s also set to EP and provide the voice of ‘Highfire’ for Amazon, based on the novel by bestselling Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer. If you don’t know that story, it’s a magical-crime-thriller, based around a Cage’s lead character who is a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who lives an isolated existence in the bayous of Louisiana… (I swear to you, I didn’t have some sort of breakdown writing this article, this is actually in development…)

Nicolas Cage’s History Of Swear Words‘ premieres Tuesday, 5th January 2020 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
