HBO Developing A ‘True Blood’ Reboot From Creators Of ‘Riverdale’ & ‘NOS4A2’

HBO has apparently begun working on a reboot of vampire drama True Blood, from ‘Riverdale’ creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and ‘NOS4A2’ creator Jami O’Brien, it has been revealed.

The original series, which only ended in 2014, was based on Charlaine Harris’ novel series The Southern Vampire Mysteries and ran for 7 seasons. The story is set in a world where vampires exist and are “out” in public due to the creation of “Tru Blood”, a synthetic blood substitute, meaning our fanged brethren no longer need to feed on humans. The main plot followed Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress living in the fictional rural town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, whose world is turned upside down when she falls in love with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a 173-year-old vampire.

Alongside Paquin & Moyer (who go on so well on the series, they got married in real life), the drama starred Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Chris Bauer, Nelsan Ellis, Jim Parrack, Carrie Preston, Todd Lowe, and Deborah Ann Woll.

The pilot script comes from Aguirre-Sacasa and O’Brien who will also exec produce alongside Original series creator Alan Ball. On the surface, this seems like a sensible duo to take the reins on a new adaptation given both of their backgrounds. Along with ‘Riverdale’, Aguirre-Sacasa created ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, along with working on ‘Katy Keene’ and ‘Supergirl’, so is no stranger to teen-led drama and horror. Meanwhile, O’Brien created the AMC vampire series ‘NOS4A2’ and previously worked on ‘Fear the Walking Dead’, along with ‘Hell On Wheels’, so also has experience in the horror field. The pair have also crossed paths before, having both worked on the HBO series ‘Big Love’ back in 2011.

There is the wider question of whether this is a little early to be rebooting True Blood, but the potential show is apparently only in early development at the moment, so may not go anywhere. We’ll let you know if we hear more.

UPDATE 22/02/23 – Confirmed as not moving forward.
