‘Risk’ Being Developed Into TV Series By ‘House of Cards’ Beau Willimon

Beau Willimon, creator of Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’, has found his next project, and he is apparently adapting the board game ‘Risk’ into a tv series!

Risk, for those of you who haven’t played, is a military strategy board game, featuring a map of the world, where players control armies and attempt to conquer their enemies’ territories. It was first invented in 1957 by French film director Albert Lamorisse, so in an odd sort of way, an on-screen version of it kind of brings it full circle!

The news of this development comes as Willimon and his Westward production company partner, Jordan Tappis, sign a multi-year deal with content production and distribution company eOne, who are a subsidiary of games company Hasbro. eOne have been the producers on shows such as ‘Sharp Objects’, ‘The Rookie’, ‘Criminal Minds’, and many, many others. The company are also currently working on a TV adaptation of ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ from The Clarkson Twins (‘The Wheel of Time’, ‘See’, ‘His Dark Materials’), and films based around Hasbro’s ‘Monopoly’ with Kevin Hart, ‘Clue’ (or ‘Cluedo’ for us Britishers), ‘Action Man’ and ‘G.I. Joe’.

We don’t know a huge amount about how Willimon intends to adapt ‘Risk’ from a board game to a tv series, however, eOne’s International Distribution President, Stuart Baxter, has previously commented that they were “blown away” by Willimon’s pitch which featured “Westworld dystopian elements combined with some of the different worlds of Game of Thrones”.

“As we continue to build out eOne’s world-class content slate, we couldn’t think of more perfect partners than Beau and Jordan – whose award-winning storytelling and imagination are among the best in the business,” commented Michael Lombardo, President, Global Television, eOne. “In Beau, we’ve found an amazing combination of brilliant producer, singular creator, and avid fan of Risk. We can’t wait to work with him and the rest of the Westward team to reimagine that brand and so much more.”

There is currently no broadcaster attached to the ‘Risk’ tv series as it is still in development, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
