‘Powerpuff Girls’: CW Casts Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron & Yana Perrault In Live-Action Pilot

The CW has found it’s ‘Powerpuff Girls’, as the US network reveals Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron & Yana Perrault will play Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup in the live-action pilot.

For the uninitiated, ‘The Powerpuff Girls‘ was an animated series, created by Craig McCracken, and followed the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. These three kindergarten-aged girls, with an array of superpowers, saved the world (or at least their city of Townsville) from monsters, would-be conquerers and a few other gross things.

The CW version somewhat different… ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ are no longer America’s pre-teen, pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

Chloe Bennet takes the role of Blossom, a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child, who holds several advanced degrees, but also has repressed kiddie-superhero trauma which has left her feeling anxious and reclusive. She aims to become a leader again, this time on her own terms.

Bennet is, of course, well known to Marvel fans as Daisy/Quake on ‘Agents Of SHIELD’, and also appeared in ‘Nashville’. Prior to that, she had a singing career under her birth name, Chloe Wang.

Dove Cameron is set to play Bubbles, whose sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us, and herself.

Cameron is an actress and singer, who is probably best known for her role as Mal on the ‘Descendants’ films, and for playing the dual roles of ‘Liv and Maddie’ in the Disney series. She also popped up in ‘Agents Of SHIELD‘ Season 5 as the villain Ruby Hale.

Yana Perrault will portray Buttercup was the rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.

If the pilot gets picked up to series, it will mark Perrault’s on-screen debut. However, the singer/actress has previously starred in Alanis Morissette musical ‘Jagged Little Pill’ on Broadway, and was due to join the cast of ‘Hamilton’ until the pandemic shut everything down. She also writes and performs her own original music.

The script for the pilot comes from Diablo Cody, best known for the brilliant movie ‘Juno’, and dramedy series ‘United States of Tara’, alongside Heather Regnier, who has written on shows such as ‘Veronica Mars’‘Sleepy Hollow’‘Falling Skies’ and ‘iZombie’.  Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV would produce the series. Cody and Regnier exec produce along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden from Berlanti Prods.

‘The Powerpuff Girls‘ is currently a pilot so may not go to series, but we’ll let you know if/when we hear more.
