‘Outlander’ Picks Up Season 7 Renewal Before Season 6 Even Airs

Great news for fans of time travelling sasanachs and their (suspiciously unaging) highland husbands, as Starz announces Outlander will return for a 7th Season before Season 6 has even aired.

‘Outlander’ follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who was a married combat nurse from 1945 that was mysteriously swept back in time to 1743 and immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. Stuck in the past, she meets Jamie (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, and a passionate affair is ignited that complicates Claire’s life as she has to reconcile her new life in the past with her knowledge of the future.

Due to the global pandemic, filming on the sixth season was delayed, but did begin shooting in February this year, so there is no premiere date announced yet. The sixth season is set to carry on pulling from Diana Gabaldon’s original novels, as it continues the plot from ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’, which was started in season five. The seventh season is set to based (as you might expect) on the seventh book, ‘An Echo in the Bone’.

“We are so excited Starz has given us the opportunity to continue the epic Outlander journey,” commented showrunner Matt Roberts. “We can’t wait to get into the writers room and start breaking Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story.”

Heughan and Balfe are set to return as Jamie & Claire, along with Sophie Skelton as Brianna “Bree” Randall, and Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield. Matthew B. Roberts continues as showrunner, with the increasingly busy Ronald D. Moore returning as exec producer. Moore is also responsible for Apple’s brilliant ‘For All Mankinds’, and is developing a “Magic Kingdom Universe” for Disney+, which will blend all the Disney theme park “lands” into one alternate reality world…

“Starz is committed to investing in unapologetic, bold premium storytelling that amplifies diverse voices and shines a spotlight on women in front of and behind the camera through our #TakeTheLead initiative,” adds Starz head of originals Christina Davis. “The hit series Outlander embodies everything about our initiative including a powerful female lead character and an amazing team of storytellers. We look forward to following the adventures of Claire and Jamie in America during the Revolution as well as more time travel during this next season.”

Outlander‘ Season 6 is set to premiere later in 2021 on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, and Starz in the USA.
