‘American Gods’ Cancelled After 3 Seasons

US network Starz has opted not to bring back American Gods, cancelling the drama after 3 Seasons it has been announced.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s novel ‘American Gods’ was the epic story of an inevitable war building between the Old Gods of mythology and our New Gods of technology. Ricky Whittle starred as ex-con Shadow Moon, a man pulled into the service of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, played by Ian McShane (‘Deadwood’, ‘John Wick’) – only to discover that not only is his charismatic but un-trustable boss actually the Norse All-Father god Odin, he’s also Shadow’s father.

“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” commented a network spokesperson in a statement.

I think it’s fair to say, the series has had a bit of a rough ride even making it to three seasons. Original showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller left the drama over “creative differences” with the network as the second season entered production. Jesse Alexander took over the reins with some help from Gaiman himself for Season 2, but the production was mired in delays and some spikey exchanges behind-the-scenes, which resulted in a number of the cast not returning for Season 3. Alexander was then replaced by Charles “Chic” Eglee for the 3rd Season as showrunner. Add to that the fact the show has seen a double-digit drop in viewing figures on Starz in the US each season, and you get some idea of why they may have decided to end the series.

“This has been an amazing journey thus far and I am so grateful to my fellow cast and crew who have worked so hard on this award-winning show,” commented Whittle in a social media post. “We have the best fans around the world and thank each of you for your passion and support, so know that Neil Gaiman, Fremantle myself and the cast are still committed to completing Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed story.”

What Whittle is referencing there is some talk of possibly concluding the story with either a final limited season or a tv movie. Whilst Starz may not want to be involved, Amazon, who air the show in some territories internationally, may decide to step in, but there is no official news at the moment either way. For now, the series is cancelled after 3 Seasons.

American Gods‘ aired on Amazon Prime in the UK, and Starz in the USA.
