Kiefer Sutherland To Star In New Espionage Drama for Paramount+

Kiefer Sutherland is heading back to the world of clandestine surveillance (but not as Jack Bauer) in a new yet-to-be-titled espionage drama for Paramount+ the streaming service has announced.

The series finds private espionage operative James Weir (Sutherland) in the midst of a battle over the preservation of democracy in a world at odds with misinformation, behavioural manipulation, the surveillance state and the interests that control these extraordinary powers.

Sutherland will executive produce alongside writer-directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (“This Is Us,” “WeCrashed”), Charlie Gogolak (“The Sinner,” “WeCrashed”), and Suzan Bymel (“Designated Survivor”). The eight-episode season produced by CBS Studios will stream exclusively on Paramount+.

“I’ve been an admirer of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra’s unique body of work for some time, and I’m thrilled to be working on this exciting new project with them and Paramount+,” commented Sutherland. “Reuniting with David Nevins [Chief Creative Officer of ViacomCBS] makes it all the more special. I can’t wait to see you all with this show in 2022.”

The world of espionage and surveillance is, of course, not new to Kiefer Sutherland having portrayed Jack Bauer in ’24’, for which he received a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and two SAG Awards. He then went on to star as President Tom Kirkman in the hit drama series ‘Designated Survivor’, and most recently played Detective Clay Bryce on the Quibi series ‘The Fugitive’.

“Kiefer Sutherland and powerful, heart-pounding dramas go hand in hand,” adds Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming, Paramount+. “We’re thrilled to have him and master storytellers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra at the helm, taking us on a very personal ride to uncover the truth. We look forward to introducing the Paramount+ audience to the service’s newest addition as we continue to expand our slate of original tentpole series.”

Paramount+ expanded internationally outside of the USA to Latin American, Canada, the Nordics, and Australia in March 2021, following its rebrand from being called CBS All Access. There is still no news on the streaming service launching in the UK yet.

Alongside this new Kiefer Sutherland-led drama, Paramount+ has announced a host of new shows including revivals of ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘Reno 911!’, ‘Inside Amy Schumer’, and ‘Frasier’; The prequel ‘Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies’, and sequel series ‘The Italian Job’; Two spin-offs from hit drama ‘Yellowstone’, and ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’, which will join returning series ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks‘, and ‘Star Trek: Picard‘, alongside ‘The Good Fight‘ and ‘Why Women Kill‘.

We don’t yet know where the Kiefer Sutherland yet-to-be-titled espionage drama will land in the UK, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
