Acclaimed Director Charlotte Brändström Joins Amazon’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Series

Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings series has added another fantastic person behind the camera as Swedish-French Director Charlotte Brändström joins the creative team.

Whilst you may not know the name Charlotte Brändström off the top of your head, you have most likely seen some of her work. Along with directed over 30 feature films, mini-series, and movies-of-the-week, she has worked on critically acclaimed shows such as ‘Outlander’, ‘The Witcher’, ‘The Outsider’, along with network hits including ‘FBI’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Chicago P.D.’ and many, many, more. She is also an International Emmy Award-nominee for the series ‘Julie, chevalier de Maupin’.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Brändström continues the work of Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona and British Chinese Director Wayne Che Yip, as she joins the international ensemble cast, currently filming in New Zealand, to direct two episodes. J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay serve as showrunners.

“I’m very excited to be guided through Middle-earth by J.D.’s and Patrick’s vision and immerse myself in the iconic world of J.R.R. Tolkien,” commented Brändström. “It’s a great privilege to be in New Zealand to work with Amazon Studios’ outstanding ensemble of creative talents.”

Casting for the show includes (takes a deep breath…) Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Sir Lenny Henry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker and Sara Zwangoban. However, at the moment, we have no idea who anyone is playing…

J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay exec produce, alongside Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, J.A. Bayona, Belén Atienza, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Bruce Richmond and Sharon Tal Yguado, co-executive producer Wayne Che Yip, and producer Christopher Newman.

“There are countless things still to see in Middle-earth, and great works to do,” Brändström added, quoting Gimli.

Seasons 1 and 2 of the ‘Lord Of The Rings‘ tv series are currently being filmed back-to-back in New Zealand and will air on Amazon Prime worldwide.
