‘Midnight Mass’: Netflix Reveals Trailer & Sept Premiere For Horror From ‘The Haunting of…’ Producers

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released the first trailer and announced a September premiere for Midnight Mass, a new horror series from creator/director Mike Flanagan (‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’).

Set in the isolated community of Crockett Island, the existing divisions of the inhabitants are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford – ‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘L.A.’s Finest’) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater – ‘Legion’, ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’).

When Father Paul’s appearance on the island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervour takes hold of the community… but do these miracles come at a price?

“As a former altar boy, about to celebrate 3 years of sobriety, it’s hard not to see what makes this so personal. The ideas at the root of this show scare me to my core,” commented writer/creator/director Mike Flanagan in a letter to fans. “There is darkness at work on Crockett Island. Some of it is supernatural, but the scariest is born of human nature. The darkness that animates this story isn’t hard to see in our own world, unfortunately. But this show is about something else as well… faith itself. One of the great mysteries of human nature. How even in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light – and hope – we sing. I hope you enjoy our song.”

Whilst this drama isn’t directly connected to Flanagan’s ‘Haunting Of…’ series, he is utilising his merry band of actors from those dramas again on this new horror. Rahul Kohli (‘Bly Manor’, ‘iZombie’), Annabeth Gish (‘Hill House’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’), Robert Longstreet (‘Hill House’, ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’), Kate Siegel (‘Bly Manor’, ‘Hill House’) and Henry Thomas (‘Bly Manor’, ‘Hill House’), are all set to appear. Michael Trucco (‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘How I Met Your Mother’) and Kristin Lehman (‘The Killing’, ‘Altered Carbon’) also join the cast.

The seven-episode limited series is created, directed and written by Flanagan who also exec produces alongside Trevor Macy (‘The Haunting of Hill House’).

Midnight Mass‘ premieres Friday, 24th September 2021 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
