‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ Anime Film Gets Full Trailer, Premiering August On Netflix

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released the full trailer for their upcoming anime film ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’, which tells the origin story of Geralt’s friend and mentor, Vesemir.

Before Geralt, there was his mentor Vesemir, a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin. But when a dangerous new power rises on the Continent, Vesemir learns that some witchering jobs are about more than just money… A strange new monster begins terrorizing a politically fraught kingdom, Vesemir finds himself on a frightening adventure that forces him to confront the demons of his past.

The series voice cast includes Theo James (‘Sanditon’, ‘Castlevania’) as Vesemir, Lara Pulver (‘The Alienist’, ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’) as Tetra, Graham McTavish (‘The Witcher’, ‘Outlander’) as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell (‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Major Crimes’) as Lady Zerbst.

This film should serve as a nice introduction to Vesemir, who is set to show up in Season 2 of ‘The Witcher’ in live-action when that land on Friday, 17th December. However, that version will be played by ‘Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia, as he is a much older man at that point. Graham McTavish is also set to appear in the second season of the main show, but will be playing Redania spymaster Dijkstra, a different character to the one he voices here in the anime.

This is one of a few complementary projects Netflix has in the works to help flesh out the complex world created by Andrzej Sapkowski. The other previously announced show is the live-action limited drama The Witcher: Blood Origin‘, which is set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of ‘The Witcher’. It tells a story lost to time – the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ is written and produced by Beau DeMayo and co-produced by ‘The Witcher’ Showrunner and Executive Producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Studio Mir’s Kwang Il Han who is also directing.

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ premieres Monday, 23rd August 2021 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
