‘Players’: Paramount+ Orders Mockumentary eSport Series

Paramount+ has ordered Players, a mockumentary series From the Peabody Award-winning creators of ‘American Vandal’, Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, that follows a fictional pro “League of Legends” eSports team, the streaming service has announced.

The show is described as a “comedic documentary-style series” that follows a fictional pro “League of Legends” esports team, as they pursue their first championship after years of close calls and heartache. To win it all, they will need their prodigy, a 17-year-old rookie, and their 27-year-old veteran to put their egos aside and work together.

The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Funny Or Die, and reunites the Peabody Award-winning producing team behind Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda’s critically acclaimed freshman series ‘American Vandal’. In addition to co-creating and executive producing alongside Perrault, Yacenda will also direct. Funny Or Die’s Joe Farrell and Mike Farah also serve as executive producers alongside Tim McAuliffe, Riot Games, 3Arts’ Ari Lubet and Brillstein Entertainment Partners’ Todd Sellers.

For those of you unfamiliar with eSports, Riot Games’ “League of Legends” is the most played PC game in the world and generates billions of hours of gameplay per year. League of Legends is also the largest esport on the planet, with the 2020 League of Legends World Championship Finals generating a record-breaking 23.04 million average minute audience.

As you may have heard, Paramount+ is set to launch in the UK & Ireland, along with Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2022. Sky Cinema subscribers will get the bonus of Paramount+ included at no additional cost, but you will also be able to get it as a separate service directly through the app for iOS and Android and across supported connected TV devices and many of the other platforms where you usually get your tv apps. Exact details and pricing to be confirmed.

We don’t yet have an air date for ‘Players‘, but it will air on Paramount+ in the USA, and presumably, in the UK too when the service launches here next year. If you want to keep track of this show you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
