‘Manifest’ Saved By Netflix With A 20-Episode 4th & Final Season

Manifest is taking to the skies again, as Netflix announces they have picked up the series for a 20-episode 4th and final season.

The news lands after weeks of negotiations back and forth between the streaming service and WBTV who create the show. Netflix made the announcement on social media today, due to it being “828 Day” (i.e. 28th Aug – 8/28).

It has been a turbulent ride for the passengers of Flight 828. Back in June, NBC opted to cancel the series after three seasons, much to the annoyance of fans, and the show’s creator, Jeff Rake, who had originally laid out plans for a six-season story arc. However, a week prior to the cancellation, Netflix US struck a deal with WBTV to began streaming the first two seasons in a second-run window on the streaming service. It then sat in Netflix’s top ten for more than a month and topped the Nielsen streaming ratings in its first week of release. Originally, the streaming said no to picking up the show, but it continued to sit at the top of the US Netflix charts, which drew them back to the table to hammer out a deal. This renewal presumably means Jeff has found a way of compressing that story into a 20-episode season instead. Whilst that may not have been the original plan, it sure beats the series ending on the season three cliffhanger!

“What started years ago as a flight of fancy deep in my imagination has evolved into the jet engine journey of a lifetime,” commented Rake. “Never in my wildest dreams could I have envisioned the worldwide outpouring of love and support for this story, its characters, and the team who work so hard to bring it all to life. That we will be able to reward the fans with the ending they deserve moves me to no end. On behalf of the cast, the crew, the writers, directors, and producers, thank you to Netflix, to Warner Bros., and of course to the fans. You did this.”

As we’ve previously mentioned, the cast options lapsed a few months ago, so WB and Netflix have been working on re-signed up all the key players. Josh Dallas and Melissa Roxburgh have apparently closed deals, with J.R. Ramirez also believed to have his boarding pass. Parveen Kaur, Luna Blaise, Matt Long and Jack Messina are still in negotiations at the moment, but are likely to return in some capacity. The only possible hitch is Long (Zeke), who is booked on the NBC pilot ‘Getaway’, but it seems they think they can work things out should the pilot go to series.

‘Manifest’ aired on Sky One in the UK, however, the 4th Season will be a Netflix exclusive both in the US and international markets. The deal should also include the first three seasons coming to the streaming service worldwide too. The news does not specify exactly which “international markets”, however, it seems likely that will include the UK. As is usual for Netflix series of this length, it will be split into two parts of ten episodes each.

“Since its premiere on Netflix [US] in June, Manifest has proven very popular with our members,” adds Bela Bajaria, Netflix Head of Global TV. “Jeff Rake and his team have crafted a beguiling mystery that has viewers around the world on the edge of their seats and believing again in second chances, and we’re thrilled that they will bring fans some closure with this final super-sized season.”

‘Manifest’ followed a turbulent but routine flight of the crew and passengers of Flight 828. However, when they disembarked they found the world had aged five-and-a-half years and their friends, families and colleagues had given up hope of ever seeing them again. Faced with the impossible, the passengers’ dreams of a second chance at life evaporated as they encounter the imminent danger surrounding them, both tangible and unexplained. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds, and some of the returned passengers soon realise they might be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible. The series starred Josh Dallas, Melissa Roxburgh, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina, Parveen Kaur and Matt Long.

We don’t yet know when ‘Manifest‘ Season 4 will air, but if you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
