‘Outlander’ Prequel Series In Development At Starz

Just before Outlander Season 6 gets its premiere this March on Starzplay UK (and Starz in the USA), the network has revealed they have begun planning a prequel series for the drama.

The potential new series comes from current showrunner & EP Matthew B. Roberts who would return to those roles for the prequel. Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis would also return as exec producers via their Tall Ship Productions company, with Sony Pictures Television once again as the studio.

Whilst they haven’t said what plot the series will follow, Outlander book author, Diana Gabaldon, did recently announce she was working on a prequel novel, so it does seem rather likely that would form the basis of the show. The novel centres on Ellen MacKenzie, eldest of the children of Jacob Ruadh MacKenzie, chief of Clan MacKenzie, wife of Brian Fraser, and the mother to a certain Jamie Fraser…

As for the main show, that returns on its new UK home of Starzplay this March, and is based on book six of the novels, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes”. The series has also been renewed for a 7th Season, based on the seventh book, “An Echo in the Bone”. There are nine books in the novel series so far, with a tenth currently being written by Gabaldon.

The last time we saw Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), where Claire had just escaped a violent encounter with Lionel Brown and returned to Fraser’s Ridge. The threat of the Revolutionary War looms over the ridge and Claire and Jamie must choose what is best for their family.

The sixth season of ‘Outlander’ sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America. Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina – and perhaps most significantly – during a period of dramatic political upheaval. The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution.

Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge. They must now defend this home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care. For the Frasers and their immediate family, “home” is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives.

Whilst ‘Outlander’ previously aired on Amazon Prime Video, the drama moved onto STARZPLAY in the UK from Season 6. All previous seasons are now also on the UK streaming service. The series will continue to air on Starz in the USA.

If you’re wondering how to get STARZPLAY UK, it is available for download on iOS, as well as on a wide range of Android supported devices as an app. You can also get it as an additional Amazon Prime Video Channel, on the Apple TV app, ROKU devices, and selected Smart TVs. Outlander‘ Season 6 airs Sunday, 6th March 2022 on STARZPLAY in the UK and other international territories, and on the same date on Starz in the USA.
