‘New Amsterdam’ To End With 5th & Final Season

NBC’s medical drama New Amsterdam will end with a final 5th Season the US broadcaster has announced (for those of you about to ask about a UK premiere for Season 4, Sky Witness has it pencilled in for “Summer 2022” at the moment).

Inspired by the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama stars Ryan Eggold (‘The Blacklist’) as the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director, who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital – the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the president of the United States under one roof – and return it to the glory that put it on the map.

“The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring,” commented Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming. “We’re so grateful to [exec producers] David Schulner, Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent and collaboration.”

It seems that the live ratings on NBC have been slipping for the drama over the years, although it still lands respectable viewership when you factor in “catch up” viewing. It sits around mid-table out of all NBC scripted shows, although it is tough to compete against three ‘Chicago’ series and three ‘Law & Order’ dramas, all of which rate higher. NBC’s scheduling also hasn’t helped season four this year, with the show being off-air and bounced around from week to week for the Olympics and things like the State Of The Union address. The final season will consist of 13-episodes.

“When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner,” adds Universal Television president Erin Underhill. “We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?’ Over the last four seasons, David, Peter and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We’re so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam to life.”

Alongside Eggold, the cast includes Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman and Jocko Sims, with Tyler Labine. Michelle Forbes guest stars as Dr. Fuentes. David Schulner and Peter Horton executive produce along with Michael Slovis, David Foster, Aaron Ginsburg, Erika Green Swafford and Shaun Cassidy.

‘New Amsterdam’ is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer’s memoir “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital” and his 15 years as medical director at the hospital. The drama is produced by Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah.

New Amsterdam‘ Season 4 is due to air on Sky Witness in “Summer 2022”. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
