‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Gets June Premiere Date On Netflix (& Tiny Teaser!)

Netflix has announced the long-awaited return of The Umbrella Academy for Season 3 will be over this June, and also drop the tiniest of teaser trailers for the upcoming series.

The wonderfully weird family superhero drama is based in a reality where, on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and having to work as a team once more to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

(SEASON 2 SPOILER WARNING BELOW)

Season 2, which premiered in July 2020 saw the family using his Number Five’s (Aidan Gallagher) powers to escape from Vanya’s (Elliot Page) 2019 apocalypse. Something which Five had warned (so, so many times) was risky… It turned out, he was right – the time jump scattered the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas, over a three year period, starting in 1960. Some had been stuck in the past for years, building new lives, certain they were the only ones who survived. Five was the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turned out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?)

As we head into Season 3, after putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, Luther (Tom Hopper), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Diego (David Castañeda), and the ghostly Ben (Justin H. Min), managed to find a way to reunite with Five and Vanya and return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them…

Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) – now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?

The Sparrow Academy consists of:

Justin Cornwell (‘Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey’, ‘I Am the Night’) as Marcus, a charming, chiselled, colossus. Honest, virtuous, and demanding, Marcus keeps the family together. Graceful but lethal, calculated but compassionate, he is as smart as he is strong. Marcus is disciplined, rational and in control. He oozes confidence and leadership without ever having to raise his voice.

Justin H. Min (‘The Umbrella Academy’) as Ben, but not the sweet Ben we know and love. This Ben is a Machiavellian tactician, wrapped up in a pretty boy body with a rumbling inner-squid. Vicious, pragmatic, and hyper-vigilant— Ben is determined to gain his status as the leader at all costs.

Britne Oldford (‘The Path’, ‘Hunters’) as Fei, who sees the world in a special way. She comes across as a misanthrope who would rather be alone than spend even a second with you. But truth be told, Fei wishes she had a friend. Most of the time, Fei is the smartest person in the room and willing to work things out. But if you cross her there’s no looking back because Fei won’t stop until the job is done.

Jake Epstein (‘Designated Survivor’, ‘Suits’) as Alphonso, whose years of crime-fighting have left his face and body with countless visual reminders of his battles. To compensate, Alphonso is armed with a caustic and biting sense of humour. The only thing he likes better than verbally battering anyone foolish enough to get in his face, is a good pizza and a six-pack of beer.

Genesis Rodriguez (‘The Fugitive’, ‘Big Hero 6’) as Sloane, a romantic and a dreamer who feels a higher cosmic calling leaving her eager to see the world and experience a life beyond her upbringing. But obligations to her family keep Sloane tethered to the Academy, as does her fear of crossing the family line. But Sloane has plans… and one day she might just be brave enough to act on them.

Cazzie David (’86’ed’, NY Times Best-selling Author Of “No One Asked For This”) as Jayme, a loner hidden under a hoodie. She doesn’t say much because she doesn’t have to. Jayme has a fear-inducing snarl. Catch a glimpse of it, and you’ll run across the street to avoid what follows. Smart and sharp as a knife, she spends most of her time hanging with Alphonso, her only friend.

Lastly, the Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube (Newcomer) as Christopher, a telekinetic cube of unknown origin. He can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear. He acts as the Sparrows’ consulted oracle who hands out incredible advice and serves as the family mediator. Trustworthy, loyal, and is treated by the Sparrows like any other sibling, Christopher is a force to be reckoned with.

Steve Blackman returns as showrunner and exec producer, with Jeff F. King as EP and director. Keith Goldberg, Mike Richardson, and Jeremy Webb also EP, with comic creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá as co-exec producers. The series is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, for Netflix.

The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 3 premieres Wednesday, 22nd June 2022 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
