ABC Renews ‘The Rookie’ For Season 5 & ‘The Good Doctor’ For Season 6

It’s that time of year when the networks start to decide what series will return, and ABC has announced two (fairly predictable) show renewals – The Rookie for Season 5, and The Good Doctor for Season 6.

‘The Rookie’ stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, who has used his life experience, determination and sense of humour to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. Nearing the end of his training, Nolan now faces his biggest challenge as a police officer when he must come to terms with the choices he has made in pursuit of the truth.

The renewal for the cop drama was pretty much a done deal, as ABC are looking at a possible spin-off series starring Niecy Nash (‘Reno 911’, ‘Scream Queens’) as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The potential spin-off is being back-door piloted over two episodes as part of the main show. ‘The Rookie’ is also a steady performer for the network and works well across linear and digital platforms, with a lift of +500% after 35 days of multiplatform viewing.

Alongside Fillion, the series stars Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Alyssa Diaz as Angela, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune and Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers.

‘The Good Doctor’ stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who continues to use his extraordinary medical gifts at St. Bonaventure Hospital’s surgical unit. As his friendships deepen, Shaun continues to tackle the world of dating and romantic relationships and work harder than he ever has before, navigating his environment to prove to his colleagues that his talents as a surgeon will save lives.

Whilst both shows are somewhat mid-table amongst all of ABC’s scripted shows, like ‘The Rookie’, ‘The Good Doctor’ is a reliable performer for ABC, with stable viewing figures and demo rating. According to the network, the drama is the No. 1 entertainment series in its Monday night timeslot.

Along with Highmore, the medical drama stars Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Christina Chang, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Paige Spara, Noah Galvin and Bria Samone.

The Rookie‘ and ‘The Good Doctor‘ both air on Sky Witness in the UK. If you want to keep track of these, or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get UK premiere dates.
