‘Raising Dion’: Netflix Cancels Pre-Teen Superhero Comic Book Drama After 2 Seasons

Netflix really should replace the “Tudum” with Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” as it’s revealed the streaming service has cancelled pre-teen superhero drama Raising Dion after two seasons.

‘Raising Dion’ followed the story of Nicole (Alisha Wainwright – ‘Shadowhunters’), who raises her son Dion (Ja’Siah Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan – ‘Black Panther’). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom were amplified when Dion started to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities.

News of the cancellation came from Sammi Haney, who played one of Dion’s best friends, Esperanza, in a post on social media.

“Sad to say that Raising Dion is CANCELED ?? Thank you for all of the amazing support we got from all of our wonderful fans! Season 2 was a success, equal to Season 1, even if just looking at how many people watched all of it and wanted a season 3,” said the actress. “The only ‘silver lining’ is that this does free me up to pursue other roles. My Netflix contract kept me from accepting other major roles offered to me (1 actually written with me in mind) on other tv shows! So if you work for a major studio, hit me up again, I’m ready!” You can see the post here.

In season one, Nicole struggled to keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter – ‘The Event’, ‘Gravity Falls’), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities. Season two, which launched in February, picked up two years after the events of last season, and followed Dion as he continues honing his powers with the support of his mom and Tevin (Rome Flynn), his Biona trainer who caught Nicole’s eye. After befriending new student Brayden (Griffin Robert Faulkner) – a fellow powered kid – a series of alarming events unfolded, and Dion learnt that danger is still looming. Navigating twists, turns, and surprise visitors, Dion and Nicole had to prevail again – not just to save themselves, but the entire city of Atlanta.

Carol Barbee (‘UnREAL’, ‘Jericho’, ‘Touch’) served as showrunner/executive producer, alongside Michael B. Jordan through his Outlier Society Productions, Michael Green (‘American Gods’, ‘Logan’), Charles D. King, and Kenny Goodman. The drama was the brainchild of commercial and music video director Dennis Liu, who created the comic book and directed the short film, which became a viral hit. He also serves as exec producer.

Raising Dion‘ Seasons 1 & 2 are available now on Netflix UK and worldwide.
