‘Doctor Who’: David Tennant & Catherine Tate To Return For 60th Anniversary

The Doctor might be getting a new face later this year, but we will also be seeing some old faces when Ncuti Gatwa begins his full run in 2023.

The BBC has announced The Tenth Doctor and Donna (or some version of them…), played by David Tennant and Catherine Tate, will be back for the show’s 60th Anniversary. When we last saw the duo, they tragically parted ways when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory, making her forget him, in order to save her life. He left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die. But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?

“They’re back!” said new showrunner Russell T Davies. “And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening? Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

Rumours have been flying around for months about the possibility of Tennant returning to the show, with some more outlandish suggestions that he might even take the lead role again. Whilst that obviously wasn’t going to be the case, having him return for the 60th Anniversary makes perfect sense… As to how RTD manages to bring Donna back into the Doctor’s life without her head exploding is anyone’s guess! And does the return of Tennant and Tate signal the possibility of other incarnations of The Doctor and companions popping up as part of the anniversary? We will have to wait and see!

As I’m sure most of you know by now, the current 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, will have her final appearance in the Autumn, which will see her regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa’s 14th Doctor. Behind the cameras, current showrunner, Chris Chibnall, also hands the sonic screwdriver back to Russell T Davies, with a new series due to arrive in 2023 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.

Doctor Who‘ returns to BBC One in Autumn 2022. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
