Netflix has revealed the trailer for Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, which returns to the streaming service this June.

The wonderfully weird family superhero drama is based in a reality where, on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and having to work as a team once more to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

(SEASON 2 SPOILER WARNING BELOW)

Season 2, which premiered in July 2020 saw the family using his Number Five’s (Aidan Gallagher) powers to escape from Vanya’s (Elliot Page) 2019 apocalypse. Something which Five had warned (so, so many times) was risky… It turned out, he was right – the time jump scattered the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas, over a three year period, starting in 1960. Some had been stuck in the past for years, building new lives, certain they were the only ones who survived. Five was the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turned out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?)

As we head into Season 3, after putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, Luther (Tom Hopper), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Diego (David Castañeda), and the ghostly Ben (Justin H. Min), managed to find a way to reunite with Five and Vanya and return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them…

Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) – now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?

The new “Sparrow Academy” consists of Justin Cornwell (‘Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey’, ‘I Am the Night’) as Marcus; Justin H. Min (‘The Umbrella Academy’) as Ben… albeit a very different version of Ben!; Britne Oldford (‘The Path’, ‘Hunters’) as Fei; Jake Epstein (‘Designated Survivor’, ‘Suits’) as Alphonso; Genesis Rodriguez (‘The Fugitive’, ‘Big Hero 6’) as Sloane; Cazzie David (’86’ed’, NY Times Best-selling Author Of “No One Asked For This”) as Jayme; And the Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube (Newcomer) as Christopher…

One of the other changes for season three is that, from the looks of the trailer, Elliot Page will be pulling double duty as both Vanya and Viktor Hargreeves. It’s not clear at the moment how Viktor fits into the story. Whether Vanya has transitioned at some point in the same way Elliot did in real life, or if this is some sort of consequence of them messing up the timeline, we will have to wait and see!

Steve Blackman returns as showrunner and exec producer, with Jeff F. King as EP and director. Keith Goldberg, Mike Richardson, and Jeremy Webb also EP, with comic creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá as co-exec producers. The series is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, for Netflix.

The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 3 premieres Wednesday, 22nd June 2022 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
