‘The Outlaws’: Season 2 Gets June UK Premiere Date On BBC One

Stephen Merchant’s comedy-thriller The Outlaws returns this June for Season 2 on BBC One the UK broadcaster has announced.

From multi-award-winning writer and director Stephen Merchant, ‘The Outlaws’ is a contemporary British comedy-drama about a disparate group of lawbreakers thrown together to complete a community service sentence. Seven strangers from different walks of life – people who would never normally interact – are forced to work together to renovate a derelict community centre. They begin by resenting the menial physical labour as much as they resent each other. But when one of their number got dragged into a dangerous world of organised crime, they united in ways none of them thought possible.

Following on directly from the first series, season two sees the gang still having time to serve on their sentences – but now they must face the fallout from their actions. If they thought the criminal underworld or the local police were done with them, they are sorely mistaken. The Outlaws must depend on one another while working with unlikely allies to atone for their sins – but can they save themselves without sacrificing their souls?

‘The Outlaws’ season one was a huge hit for the BBC, giving them the biggest comedy launch of 2021. The series has also been streamed 11m times on BBC iPlayer. If you’re wondering how the show is back so fast when the last season only aired in October 2021, season two was shot back-to-back with season one due to COVID.

“Well it turns out that shooting two series of a show under a pandemic is a nightmare, and I would suggest no one ever does it,” commented Merchant. “Particularly if one of your key cast members is 79-year-old Oscar winner Christopher Walken, because every day you’re on a knife-edge hoping he doesn’t get COVID. If anyone even looks like they’re going to sneeze near him, you jump in front of him like you’re taking a bullet for the president.”

The second series will see the return of Academy Award-winning actor Christopher Walken, alongside writer and star Stephen Merchant (The Office, Jojo Rabbit), with Rhianne Barreto (Honour, Hanna), Gamba Cole (Soon Gone: A Windrush Chronicle, Hanna), Darren Boyd (Killing Eve), Clare Perkins (EastEnders), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Jessica Gunning (Back), Charles Babalola (Bancroft), Nina Wadia (Goodness Gracious Me, Bend It like Beckham), Tom Hanson (Brassic), and Aiyana Goodfellow (Small Axe) as Esme. Guest stars this season include Julia Davis (Sally4Ever), Dolly Wells (Dracula), Ian McElhinney (Game Of Thrones, Derry Girls), and Claes Bang (Dracula).

‘The Outlaws’ is created by Stephen Merchant and Elgin James. Executive Producers are Stephen Merchant for Four Eyes, Luke Alkin, Kenton Allen and Matthew Justice for Big Talk, and Tanya Qureshi is the Commissioning Editor for the BBC. The series is a co-production between BBC One and Amazon Studios. BBC Studios are handling global distribution.

The Outlaws‘ Season 2 premieres Sunday, 5th June 2022 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The series airs on Prime Video in the USA.
