Disney Plus Announces “Disney+ Day” Premieres In September Including Thor, Mike, Pinocchio & More!

by Dave Elliott

Disney Plus has announced some of the content premiering on the streaming service this September for their annual “Disney+ Day” including some huge film releases, interesting new documentaries and more! Here is a breakdown of what to expect so far.

Thor: Love and Thunder (Film)

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ gets its much-anticipated home release for free on Disney+. Directed once again by the brilliant (and Oscar-winning!) Taika Waititi, the movie sees our titular character on a quest for inner peace… Unfortunately, that peace is shattered by the rise in power of Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who, as his name rather suggests, is out to butcher all other gods, thus ruining Thor’s retirement plans. To help battle the new threat, Thor enlists some friends in the form of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Taika Waititi). We also know the Guardians Of The Galaxy make an appearance, which makes sense as the Norse God hitched a ride with the group at the conclusion of Endgame.

In addition to the film, “Disney+ Day” will also see the release of ‘Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder’ episode of the docuseries where Taika, alongside the cast and crew, reveal the secrets behind the creation of the film.

Pinocchio (2022 Film)

Not to be confused with the other ‘Pinocchio’ movie which is coming to Netflix soon, this is Disney’s live-action and CGI retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet (voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Other characters include Geppetto (Tom Hanks), the woodcarver who builds and treats Pinocchio as if he were his real son; Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his “conscience”; the Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo); “Honest” John (Keegan-Michael Key); Sofia the Seagull (Lorraine Bracco) and The Coachman (Luke Evans).

Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return (Special)

Over on the Star Wars side of things, they have announced ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return’, a new documentary special that explores the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to the screen, as well as Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their classic roles. Director Deborah Chow leads the cast and crew as they create new heroes and villains that live alongside new incarnations of beloved Star Wars characters, and an epic story that dramatically bridges the saga films.

Mike (UK/Ireland only – Series)

From creator/screenwriter Steven Rogers and the team behind ‘I, Tonya’ and showrunner Karin Gist (‘Our Kind of People’) comes Mike. The limited series drama explores the tumultuous ups and downs of Mike Tyson’s boxing career and personal life – from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again. Trevante Rhodes stars in the title role. The series airs on August 25, on Hulu in the USA.

Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory (Series)

Armed with leading-edge film technology, 29-year-old National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory takes viewers along on his journeys to capture real-life animal stories in some of the harshest environments on our planet. If you want to know more about Bertie, his extraordinary story and his work in the natural world, check out our interview with Bertie Gregory here.

Cars On The Road (Series)

Lightning and Mater are back in a new tv series. The Disney+ Original follows Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and his best friend, Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy), as they head east from Radiator Springs on a cross-country road trip to meet up with Mater’s sister. Brilliant composer Jake Monaco created the score for all nine episodes.

Frozen and Frozen 2 Sing-Alongs (Films)

I’d like to apologise to all parents out there, but you’ll have to… “Let It Gooooo!” Yes, both ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen 2’ will have sing-along versions added to the streaming service on “Disney+ Day” this year…

The Simpsons – Welcome to the Club (Short)

A new short from The Simpsons. Lisa is heart-set on becoming a princess but is surprised to learn that being bad might be more fun…

Remembering (Film Short)

A film short directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Elijah Allan-Blitz starring ‘Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson. The story follows a writer (Larson) who loses a very important idea when her phone rings. Personified as golden light, this lost idea is found by the writer’s inner child, who takes us on a journey through The World of Imagination. It is easy to lose touch with this world, but each of us can be inspired by it – if we just remember.

“Disney+ Day” this year is Thursday, 8th September 2022, and this is not a full list, so expect more announcements across social media in the coming days.
