‘Bioshock’ Film Adaptation Ordered At Netflix From Francis Lawrence & Michael Green

Netflix has ordered a film adaptation of beloved video game ‘Bioshock’ from director Francis Lawrence and writer Michael Green the streaming service has announced.

For the non-gamers amongst you, the ‘BioShock’ franchise is set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong. The series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation.

Developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the award-winning and critically-acclaimed ‘BioShock’ game franchise includes BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. In the original game, which one would assume will be the basis for the film, you play Jack, the sole survivor of a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, who discovers the entrance to the recluse underwater city of “Rapture”. Unfortunately, things have gone terribly wrong in what was supposed to be this sea-based utopia. A civil war within the city has left it damaged and in disrepair. Even worse, its citizens have been turned into mutated and monstrous versions of themselves. With the help of a mysterious voice called “Atlas”, Jack attempts to unravel what happened, whilst finding a way back to the surface and home.

Across the titles’ original releases as well as multiple re-releases, remastered editions and bundled collections, ‘BioShock’ has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, and is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and beloved series in all of gaming. The next instalment is currently in development by Cloud Chamber.

This live-action film adaptation will see Francis Lawrence (‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, ‘I Am Legend’, ‘Slumberland’) take the director’s chair, with Michael Green (‘Logan’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Death on the Nile’) writing the screenplay. Cameron MacConomy exec produces for about:blank, with Strauss Zelnick for Take-Two Interactive. Roy Lee produces for Vertigo Entertainment, with Francis Lawrence for about:blank. 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc also produce the movie.

There is no news on casting for ‘Bioshock’ yet or a release date, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.

Here’s hoping it’s R-rated then as every BioShock game is an 18 so it should be. It shouldn’t really need to be said, but then again the Assassin’s Creed film somehow turned out to be a family-friendly 12A despite every mainline Assassin’s Creed game being a 15 at the very least and often an 18.
