The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself: YA Drama From Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project) Gets Oct Premiere On Netflix

Netflix has announced an October premiere and released a “first look” photo for The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, a new YA dramedy from Joe Barton (‘The Lazarus Project’, ‘Giri/Haji’), based on the Half Bad trilogy of books written by Sally Green.

The series is a darkly humorous, romantic, roller-coaster ride of a young adult show. It’s a story about the indomitable will to survive and defy the odds. Sixteen-year-old Nathan (Jay Lycurgo – ‘Titans’) is the illegitimate son of the world’s most dangerous witch. Fearing he will follow in his father’s footsteps, Nathan is constantly monitored. But as the boundaries between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fray, Nathan – along with mischievous Annalise and charismatic Gabriel – will soon discover who he truly is.

Alongside Lycurgo (‘Titans’, ‘The Batman’, ‘I May Destroy You’) as Nathan Byrne, the series stars Nadia Parkes (‘Domina’, ‘Starstruck’) as Annalise, Emilien Vekemans (‘Transferts’) as Gabriel, Jesper Jones (professional debut) as Jessica, Paul Ready (‘Motherland’, ‘The Terror’) as Soul, David Gyasi (‘Carnival Row’, ‘Troy: Fall of a City’) as Marcus Edge, Karen Connell (‘Vikings’) as Ceelia, Kerry Fox (‘Conversations with Friends’, ‘Last Tango in Halifax’) as Esmie, Fehinti Balogun (‘I May Destroy You’, ‘Dune’) as Bjorn, Misha Butler (‘Kiss Me First’) as Niall, Liz White (‘Unforgotten’, ‘Brexit: The Uncivil War’) as Penelope, and Róisín Murphy (award-winning musician) as Mercury.

The edgy, YA drama is grounded in the modern day where witches live amongst us. Expect magic, sarcasm, banter, potions in zip-lock bags, hunters, romance, loyalty and unbreakable friendship… it’s a truly f*cked-up ride.

‘The Bastard Son & The Devil’ Himself is written by Joe Barton (‘The Lazarus Project’, ‘Giri/Haji’) and based on the Half Bad books by Sally Green. The series boasts an entirely new score created by British pop group Let’s Eat Grandma. Colm McCarthy (‘Black Mirror: Black Museum’, ‘The Girl with all the Gifts’), Rachna Suri (‘Mr Whippy’, ‘Our Lad’) and Debs Paterson (‘Willow’, ‘Domina’) direct the series.

The show is produced by The Imaginarium, the company founded by actor/director (and sometimes Gollum) Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish. Joe Barton, Andy Serkis, Jonathan Cavendish, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, and Colm McCarthy are exec producers.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself‘ premieres Friday, 28th October 2022 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
