10 Best Series About Vikings

It should come as no surprise that there is a growing interest in historical (and gory) TV shows. With the action-packed bill of big-name shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings leading the way (okay, yes, GoT is historical-fantasy, not “historical” as such!), there has been somewhat of a resurgence of the epic series genre, as it were. While maybe not as fun as playing on Viking Slots, watching these shows can be riveting and exciting and intense all at the same time. Kingdoms rise and fall, romances blossom and crumble, and heroes are crowned while villains seem to run amok.

The age of the Vikings is an intriguing one, so much so that they have been the subject of many popular and successful movies and TV shows over the years. There’s something about the history and mythology of Viking and Norse culture that entices and continues to enthral and attract many viewers.

In this article, you’ll be able to see ten of the very best TV shows that have had an impact on the genre and the TV world as a whole.

Let’s dive in!

Vikings

No Viking list would be complete without mentioning the literal Vikings show. It’s widely popular and loved by many viewers. The protagonist of the show is Ragnar Lothbrok, who is a brave and fearless warrior and farmer. Viewers follow his journey through six riveting seasons as he embarks on an awesome voyage across the unknown sea from his home in Scandanavia to England.

Vikings is a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride with all the bloodshed and violence you would expect from a series about these legendary invaders.

Vikings: Valhalla

The hugely anticipated spin-off to the original Vikings series mentioned above, Vikings: Valhalla, was released on Netflix and is available to watch right now.

It’s an eight-part series (with the second and third seasons also on their way soon), and it’s written by Vikings writer Michael Hirst. The plot is set 100 years after the original Vikings show and follows a new generation of Norsemen and women.

It’s a must-see for fans of the original show and contains plenty of action, with epic battle scenes and strong characters involved, too!

The Last Kingdom

Fans of the above-mentioned shows will also enjoy The Last Kingdom. It’s an epic show full of battles and set in the same historical era as the Vikings shows, but the story is told from the perspective of the Saxons as they are attacked by the invading Vikings. It’s a must-watch!

Norsemen

This Norwegian comedic show is all about the lighter side of the various plundering and pillaging that the Vikings are known for. Norsemen makes fun of many of the Viking traditions, which makes it a unique change from the usual bloodthirsty battles and violence of other epic shows.

It’s light-hearted and a little silly, which might not please the die-hard fans of shows like Vikings, but it’s definitely something different and worth giving a try.

Dragons: Race to the Edge

A lighter show full of dragons and ancient Viking traditions, Race to the Edge is based on the popular animated film How to Train Your Dragon. It’s set in the days of the Vikings with a mix of humour, light-hearted sentiment, and various Norse legends and mythologies.

The Witcher

Whilst not Vikings exactly, this show is basically Vikings, but with magic. It’s an exciting and fast-paced series with awesome battle scenes and a hearty dose of magic and mayhem to go with it. Henry Cavill (who plays the protagonist) is great, and the special effects are tremendous. It’s a winner!

Game of Thrones

The iconic show ran for eight action-filled seasons while winning countless awards as it went. If you haven’t watched GoT yet, it’s definitely time to see what all the fuss is about! Yes, it isn’t technically Vikings, but it has myth, legends, swords, blood, gore, and fighting, so is likely to be attractive to the same audience.

Vinland Saga

For fans of Anime and Vikings, Vinland Saga is perfect. The show begins as a classic tale of revenge but eventually evolves into so much more. A must-see if you’re a fan of classic Anime.

Ragnarok

This show is a unique Viking-themed premise as it brings Viking mythology into the modern world, much like the Thor movies do. It’s a refreshing watch, however, as the show is in the Norwegian language and was made in partnership with a Danish company, which means it brings authentic modern Scandinavian culture to the fore.

Loki

The popular Disney+ show takes us through the story of the mischievous and wily Norse demi-god Loki, brother of Marvel superhero Thor. As such, it definitely qualifies as a Viking TV show because Loki’s origins are in Norse mythology.

Conclusion

Let’s face it: Vikings are awesome! Norse mythology and culture are vastly explored in each of the above-mentioned titles, and you can be sure that many more will begin to surface as the years go by, not just on TV but in cinemas, too!
