HBO and Sky have released a trailer for the much-anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us a drama based on the hugely popular video game, from Craig Mazin, the man behind the phenomenal ‘Chernobyl’, and Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog VP, and writer of the ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Uncharted’ video games.

Based on the critically acclaimed video game ‘The Last of Us’, developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation platforms, the story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal – ‘Narcos’, ‘The Mandalorian’), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey – ‘Game Of Thrones’), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Alongside Ramsey and Pascal, the series stars Gabriel Luna (‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’) as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother; Merle Dandridge (reprising her role from the games) as Marlene, the head of the Fireflies resistance movement; Nico Parker (‘Dumbo’, ‘The Third Day’) as Sarah, Joel’s daughter; Murray Bartlett (‘The White Lotus’) as Frank, a survivalist living in an isolated town, alongside Bill, played by Nick Offerman (‘Parks and Recreation’); And Anna Torv (‘Fringe’, ‘Mindhunter’) as Tess, a hardened survivor and Joel’s smuggler partner.

They are joined by a number of actors who performed characters in the video games but take new roles for the tv series. They include Jeffrey Pierce (who performed as Tommy in the games) as Perry, a rebel in a quarantine zone, alongside Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who portrayed Joel and Ellie in the games, and take undisclosed roles in the tv series.

Craig Mazin, the man who created the multi-award-winning drama ‘Chernobyl’, exec produces and writes the script alongside writer and creative director of the original game, Neil Druckmann. Carolyn Strauss (‘Chernobyl’, ‘Game of Thrones’) also exec produces with Evan Wells, the president of Naughty Dog, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The project is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television, Word Games, Naughty Dog and PlayStation Productions.

The Last of Us‘ is set to premiere in 2023 on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK. It will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the USA. We don’t have a date or time yet, but it will be simulcast in the UK with the USA broadcast.
