Netflix has released the trailer for ‘Blockbuster‘, a new comedy about the last Blockbuster video store in America, from Vanessa Ramos (‘Superstore’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’), starring Randall Park & Melissa Fumero, which premieres this November on the streaming service.
‘Blockbuster’ follows Timmy Yoon (Park), an analogue dreamer living in a 5G world. And after learning he is operating the last Blockbuster Video in America, Timmy and his staff employees (including his long-time crush, Eliza (Fumero) fight to stay relevant. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection.
Randall Park (‘WandaVision’, ‘Young Rock’, ‘Fresh Off the Boat’) & Melissa Fumero (‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’) star alongside Tyler Alvarez (‘American Vandal’), Madeleine Arthur (‘Snowpiercer’, ‘The Magicians’), Olga Merediz (‘In the Heights’, ‘Orange Is the New Black’), JB Smoove (‘Harley Quinn’, ‘SNL’, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’) and Kamaia Fairburn (‘Star Falls’, ‘Holly Hobbie’).
There is a certain irony to the fact that this show is airing on Netflix, the company that is arguably largely responsible for the fall of the Blockbuster franchise. However, it is actually inspired by a real store based in Bend, Oregon, USA, the only Blockbuster branded video store still open in the world, which was the subject of the 2020 documentary film, ‘The Last Blockbuster‘.
‘Blockbuster’ is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and comes from creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner Vanessa Ramos (‘Superstore’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’). David Caspe (‘Happy Endings’, ‘Black Monday’) and Jackie Clarke (‘Superstore’, ‘Happy Endings’) also serve as writers/executive producers, with John Davis and John Fox executive producing for Davis Entertainment (‘Jungle Cruise’).
