‘Wednesday’ Renewed For Season 2 At Netflix

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has given a 2nd Season to Tim Burton’s Wednesday the streaming service has announced today.

The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.

The renewal news doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the comedy mystery is now one of the most successful series ever on Netflix. It ranks #2 on the Most Popular (English) TV list with 1.237 Billion hours viewed within its first 28 days. The series crossed the 1 billion hour view mark only three weeks after debut – joining ‘Stranger Things 4’ and ‘Squid Game’ as the third title to reach this milestone within its first 28 days.

Ironically, it’s also good news for Netflix’s main streaming rival, as the show is made by MGM Television, which was bought by Amazon last year.

Jenna Ortega (‘Jane the Virgin’, ‘You’) stars in the title role of Wednesday, with Catherine Zeta-Jones as her mother Morticia, Luis Guzmán (‘Godfather of Harlem’, ‘Narcos’) as her father Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, George Burcea as Lurch, and Victor Dorobantu as Thing, the family’s non-verbal disembodied hand.

Other cast includes Gwendoline Christie (Principal Larissa Weems), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Galpin), Percy Hynes White (Xavier Thorpe), Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Naomi J Ogawa (Yoko Tanaka), Moosa Mostafa (Eugene Ottinger), Georgie Farmer (Ajax Petropolus), Riki Lindhome (Dr. Valerie Kinbott), with Christina Ricci (Marilyn Thornhill).

The series comes from Al Gough and Miles Millar, the duo behind ‘Smallville’, ‘Into the Badlands’, and ‘The Shannara Chronicles’. The acclaimed director of all things creepy, Tim Burton, is set to make his tv directorial debut on the series and will serve as showrunner alongside Gough and Millar. The team also includes Andrew Mittman for 1.21 (‘The Addams Family’, ‘Alphas’), Kevin Miserocchi (Tee and Charles Addams Foundation), Kayla Alpert (‘Code Black’, ‘Up All Night’), Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania (‘RESPECT’, ‘Addams Family 2’), and Gail Berman (‘The Addams Family’, ‘Alphas’).

Wednesday‘ Season 1 can be found on Netflix UK and worldwide.
