‘Dune’ Writer Jon Spaihts Hired For Netflix’s ‘Gears Of War’ Live-Action Film Adaptation
Netflix has hired ‘Dune’ writer Jon Spaihts to pen their live-action adaptation movie of the video game ‘Gears Of War’ the streaming service has announced.
For those of you unaware of the game, with over 40 million copies sold, ‘Gears of War’ is one of gaming’s richest and most acclaimed sagas. A society divided and on the brink of collapse faces total extinction by the Locust, a monstrous threat from below. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand. The series has been critically acclaimed for redefining the tactical third-person and cooperative shooter genre and has one of gaming’s most passionate fanbases.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” commented Spaihts. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
Jon Spaihts most recently landed an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’, and also penned the script for the upcoming ‘Dune: Part Two’. His other work includes writing Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’, and the sci-fi film ‘Passengers’.
Back in November 2022, Netflix announced a deal with The Coalition, the developer behind the ‘Gears of War’ games, to produce a live-action film, alongside an adult animated series for the streaming platform, with potentially more stories to follow.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” said The Coalition. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic science fiction universes and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honour our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
The Coalition to produce the movie, with Jon Spaihts writing the script. A director has not yet been attached to the project. There is obviously no premiere date announced for the ‘Gears Of War’ movie, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
