Netflix Renews ‘YOU’ For 5th & Final Season
All good serial killers must come to an end, and that end is coming for Joe Goldberg, as Netflix announces ‘YOU‘ will return for a 5th and final season. This is a creative decision to bring the story to a close.
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, “What would you do for love?” the series follows Joe Goldberg, a man who will do just about anything when love is at stake…
The drama will be undergoing some behind-the-scenes changes heading into the final season. The series was developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble based on the Alloy books, with Gamble serving as showrunner. However, she has now decided to step back to focus on other projects, and is handing over the reins to exec producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, who have been with the series since seasons one and two.
“Ever since our friends at Alloy shared Caroline Kepnes’ fantastic book, we have always conceived it as a five-season journey,” said Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, exec producers. “We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike and Justin as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home.”
The show began following brilliant bookstore manager Joe (Penn Badgley – ‘Gossip Girl’) who crossed paths with “Beck” (Elizabeth Lail – ‘Once Upon a Time’) an aspiring writer. Using the internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly became an obsession as he quietly and strategically removed every obstacle – and person – in his way… The following seasons saw him move to LA and a new love interest, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti – ‘Haunting Of Hill House’), who he eventually starts a family with, in the Northern California enclave of Madre Linda… However, things do not go well…
The most recent fourth season saw Joe flee to Europe to escape his “messy” past, adopt a new identity, and, of course, to pursue true love. But he soon found himself in the strange new role of reluctant detective as he discovered he may not be the only killer in London. The recently launched part two of season four ended with Joe returning to his season one home, New York City.
“Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honour and ridiculously fun,” adds Gamble. “And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgley. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.”
‘YOU’ was developed by Greg Berlanti (DC/CW shows, ‘Riverdale’) and Sera Gamble (‘The Magicians’, ‘Aquarius’, ‘Supernatural’) who serve as exec producers, alongside Foley, Lo, Schechter, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo, John Scott, Neil Reynolds, and Lee Toland Krieger. Season 5 sees Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo take over showrunning duties. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
‘YOU‘ Season 5 does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Netflix UK and worldwide. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
