‘The Rookie’ Renewed For Season 6
‘The Rookie‘ will be back on patrol for another season as ABC announces the cop drama will return for Season 6 on the US network.
‘The Rookie’ stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, who has used his life experience, determination and sense of humour to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. The fifth season, which is currently airing on Sky Witness in the UK, sees Nolan become a training officer himself, taking his own rookie cop under his wing.
The renewal had largely been expected given the show has been a ratings hit for ABC. Out of the 10 dramas on the network this season, it ranks 1st in total viewing figures, and 2nd in the 18-49 demographic, just behind ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
The spin-off series, ‘The Rookie: Feds’, has faired less well, and talks are still ongoing about a renewal. It’s currently 8th (out of 10) in total viewing figures and 7th in the 18-49 demo. Despite that, it may still land a pick-up due to its connection to its parent show.
ABC still has quite a number of shows waiting for renewal including ‘The Good Doctor‘, ‘Station 19’, and ‘The Conners’, all of which are likely to get renewed, but there are cast contracts to figure out before they do, which is why they’re taking longer. New series ‘Will Trent’ also looks likely for renewal. Things are looking less safe for ‘Home Economics’, ‘Big Sky’, and ‘Alaska Daily’… We should get most of these renewals or cancellations confirmed by late April/early May as we head into “Upfronts” in mid-May where the US networks present their next season line-up to advertisers.
Alongside Fillion, ‘The Rookie’ stars Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Alyssa Diaz as Angela, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune and Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers.
‘The Rookie’ is produced by Entertainment One (eOne), which is the lead studio and international distributor (that is why the show airs on Sky Witness and not Disney+ in the UK). Disney’s ABC Signature are co-producers.
