‘Warrior’ Cancelled After 3 Seasons By US Streaming Service MAX

Andrew Koji-led drama not returning

by Dave Elliott

Some bad news for fans of martial arts drama Warrior. Warner Bros Discovery-owned US streaming service MAX has decided to cancel the show after three seasons… There is a tiny glint of hope, but we’ll get to that…

From ‘Banshee’ creator Jonathan Tropper and ‘Fast and the Furious’ Justin Lin, based on an original concept and treatment by the legendary Bruce Lee, ‘Warrior‘ is a gritty, action-packed crime drama set during the brutal Tong Wars of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 19th century. The series follows Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), a martial arts prodigy who emigrates from China to San Francisco under mysterious circumstances. After proving his worth as a fighter, Ah Sahm becomes a hatchet man for the Hop Wei, one of Chinatown’s most powerful tongs (Chinese organized crime family).

That tiny morsel of hope I mentioned comes in the form of Netflix. The streamer, who has a habit of rescuing cancelled shows (Manifest, Lucifer, etc…), has acquired the existing three seasons in a co-exclusive deal with MAX in markets which have the WBD streamer (so that does not include the UK.) However, if the show does well for Netflix, it is possible they could decide to order a new season. I stress this is a small possibility at the moment, as it would very much depend on what the numbers look like for Netflix, but it leaves a little crack of hope for fans.

“Warrior is a show that simply refuses to die. Through platform and regime changes, the writers, producers, cast, crew, and our stunt team continued to make something powerful, relevant, and wildly unique. And now, thanks to Netflix, we’ve been given yet another lease on life, and I’m thrilled for everyone involved that millions more viewers around the world will discover it,” commented series creator Jonathan Tropper in a statement to Deadline.

As for series lead, Andrew Koji, it was recently announced that he would be joining the third season of the hit drama ‘Gangs Of London’. Koji stars in ‘Warrior’ alongside Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, Dianne Doan, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos, and Joe Taslim.

‘Warrior‘ is produced by Perfect Storm Entertainment, Tropper Ink Productions and Bruce Lee Entertainment; created and executive produced by Jonathan Tropper. Justin Lin and Andrew Schneider executive produce on behalf of Perfect Storm Entertainment. Shannon Lee executive produces for Bruce Lee Entertainment. Executive produced by Brad Kane and Richard Sharkey. Co-executive produced by Kenneth Lin, Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard.

Warrior‘ aired on Sky Max in the UK, and on MAX in the USA.
