Sky Max has set a December UK premiere date for ‘Based on a True Story‘, a dark comedic thriller about America’s obsession with true crime, starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina.
‘Based on a True Story’ is a satire of the true crime genre with elements that are loosely (very loosely!) inspired by true events. The drama follows Ava (Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Messina), a Los Angeles-based down-on-their-luck couple, who decide that their way to make money is to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime and start a podcast… Then they meet Matt, the plumber…
“Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories – they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show,” said creator/showrunner/exec producer/writer, Craig Rosenberg (The Boys, Gen V). “I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn’t come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage. Our Los Angeles setting – the city where everybody wants to be famous – became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder.”
Emmy Award nominee Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) stars as ‘Ava Bartlett,’ alongside Chris Messina (Air) as ‘Nathan’ and Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives) as ‘Matt’ in your next obsession. Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Li Jun Li also star.
If you’ve read the description and are thinking “That sounds a bit like ‘Only Murders In The Building‘”, it is not that (although that is also a brilliant show)… I’ve tried to keep the description deliberately vague so as not to give anything away, but tonally it is much closer to Cuoco’s previous drama ‘The Flight Attendant’. Thrilling, darkly funny, and a little weird in places, ‘Based on a True Story’ is well worth a watch. The series has been renewed for Season 2 by Peacock who airs it in the USA.
