Allison Janney Joins Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat’ Season 2

Janney returns to the West Wing

by Dave Elliott

‘The West Wing’ star Allison Janney is heading back to the White House, albeit on a new show, in a new role, as she joins Season 2 of Netflix’s The Diplomat.

From showrunner Debora Cahn (‘The West Wing’, ‘Homeland’), ‘The Diplomat’ is a high-stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships, between countries and people.

If you didn’t catch season one of this brilliant dramedy, the series follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight – all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

Academy Award winner and seven-time Emmy Award winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya; The West Wing) takes up a guest-starring role in Season 2 as Vice President Grace Penn. The actress is, of course, familiar with the corridors of power, having spent seven seasons as press secretary/chief of staff C.J. Cregg in ‘The West Wing’.

Alongside Russell and Sewell, the series also stars Ato Essandoh (‘Chicago Med’, ‘Altered Carbon’) as Stuart Heyford, the Deputy Chief of Mission; Ali Ahn (‘Billions’, ‘Raising Dion’) as CIA Station Chief, Eidra Park; Rory Kinnear (‘Bond’ franchise, ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Bank of Dave’) as the (somewhat Boris-like) UK Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge; and David Gyasi (‘Carnival Row’, ‘Interstellar’) as Austin Dennison, the UK’s very British Foreign Secretary.

We don’t know exactly when ‘The Diplomat‘ Season 2 will land on Netflix but the streaming service has promised it is coming in 2024. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
