Sky has released a trailer for upcoming limited series ‘The Sympathizer‘, which stars Hoa Xuande alongside Sandra Oh, Robert Downey Jr… and Robert Downey Jr… and Robert Downey Jr… from ‘Oldboy’ director Park Chan-wook.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, ‘The Sympathizer’ is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.
The series stars Hoa Xuande (‘Last King of the Cross’, ‘Cowboy Bebop’), Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Emmy winner Sandra Oh (‘Killing Eve’) and Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr., who plays multiple roles.
The drama comes from co-showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director (episodes 1-3) Park Chan-wook, and co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer, Don McKellar. Fernando Meirelles directs episode 4, whilst Marc Munden directs episodes 5-7. Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King, and Tea Ho also write on the limited series.
Executive producers are Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey; Jisun Back for Moho Film; Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media; Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt; Author of the book, Viet Thanh Nguyen, also executive produces. ‘The Sympathizer’ is a Co-Production between HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media, produced in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
‘The Sympathizer‘ will air on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW “soon”, although they haven’t given an exact UK premiere date. However, it will air on April 14, 2024, on Max in the USA, so it’ll be after that.
