Prime Video has given the green light to a live-action series adaptation of the ‘Spider-Man Noir‘ comic book, with Nicolas Cage set to star.
Titled ‘Noir’, the series tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.
We first got news that this was in development last year, as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Cage previously voiced a version of Spider-Man Noir in the 2018 animated film ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. This series is developed by Oren Uziel (The Lost City, 22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel’s The Punisher, Shantaram), who will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, alongside Lord and Miller. Emmy-winning director Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve) will be behind the camera for the first two episodes.
“Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honoured to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers,” commented Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. “The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”
‘Noir’ is the second Sony-Marvel project to be greenlit at Amazon, following the previously announced ‘Silk: Spider Society’, which comes from showrunner Angela Kang (‘The Walking Dead’). More shows are planned, although it’s unclear which of the 900+ Spider-man-related Marvel superheroes and villains controlled by Sony Pictures will get their own series. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and former Sony boss Amy Pascal, are overseeing and exec producing all the live-action Sony/Marvel TV series.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” adds Katherine Pope, President Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”
‘Noir‘ does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Prime Video UK and in more than 240 countries and territories. In the USA, it will first premiere on the MGM+ linear channel. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
