Sony Developing a ‘Spider-Man Noir’ Series For Prime Video

Following the announcement back in November last year that Sony was working on a suite of live-action Marvel series for Prime Video, beginning with ‘Silk: Spider Society’, news landed today that the second live-action series may be based around ‘Spider-Man Noir’.

Like the comicbook, the new show would be set in its own universe, in the Great Depression era in 1930s New York City. However, unlike the comicbook, it would not be a Peter Parker variant but would follow an older, grizzled superhero character.

The character first appeared in the comicbooks in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir line, set in an alternate universe. This Peter Parker variant does get his powers after being bitten by a spider, however, the spider is inside an ancient idol, and it gives him a vision of a spider god who promises him the powers. When he awakes inside a cocoon, he has the powers of a spider and sets about waging war against the criminal underworld of NYC.

This would be the first time the character has appeared in live-action on screen. He has popped up twice before in animation – in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’, voiced by Milo Ventimiglia, and in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, voiced by Nicolas Cage.

The series is part of the group of Marvel superheroes and villains controlled by Sony Pictures as part of their deal with Marvel for the Spider-man character. According to Variety, who broke the news, Oren Uziel developed the project alongside Academy Award-winning ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and former Sony boss Amy Pascal, who are overseeing and exec producing all the live-action Sony/Marvel tv series. Uziel would write and exec produce via his Pascal Pictures for Sony Pictures Television.

Uziel’s most recent project was the action-adventure comedy ‘The Lost City’ starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Prior to that, he worked on ‘Mortal Kombat’, ’22 Jump Street’, ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’, and the now-dead ‘Supergirl’ film which was to star Sasha Calle. His upcoming projects include ‘Clue’, based on the popular board game, and ‘Detective Pikachu 2’.

‘Spider-Man Noir’ is classed as “in development” so may not go to series, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
