Critically acclaimed medical thriller Malpractice has commenced filming in Belfast with Helen Behan (The Virtues, Elizabeth is Missing) and Jordan Kouamé (Scoop) reprising their roles as Dr Norma Callahan and Dr George Adjei of the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU), brought in to investigate a new doctor accused of malpractice.

Joining Helen and Jordan this season are Tom Hughes (Victoria, The English), Selin Hizli (Am I Being Unreasonable, Mum), Zoë Telford (Sherlock, The Lazarus Project), Hannah McClean (Blue Lights, Josh), Seraphina Beh (Polite Society, Top Boy) and Ace Bhatti (Line of Duty, Bohemian Rhapsody).

Hughes will play Dr James Ford, a Psychiatric Registrar in a North Yorkshire hospital. His personal life is a mess, and his colleagues might find him arrogant, but he appears committed to his vulnerable patients. So when he finds himself torn between a new mother attending a routine postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a floridly psychotic woman during a busy on-call shift, no one could predict the terrible consequences.

As George and Norma uncover a hospital seemingly at war with itself, to what lengths will James go to preserve his position? Is he a doctor with a God complex or the victim of wider problems?

‘Malpractice’ has been recommissioned for a second season by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill and is produced by award-winning production company World Productions, part of ITV Studios. Series two is written and created by Grace Ofori-Attah (Grace Under Pressure, In The Long Run) who will serve as executive producer alongside Simon Heath (Line of Duty, Save Me, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Anne, The Gathering), Roderick Seligman and Emma Luffingham (Showtrial, Karen Pirie) for World Productions. Episode 3 is written by Hannah K. Richards.

“Grace has delved even deeper into her personal history as a Consultant Psychiatrist to deliver both a brilliant thriller and timely look at a critical area of the NHS,” said CEO of World Productions, Simon Heath. “Her great writing has once again attracted a stellar cast to join Helen and Jordan to tell this new story.”

Episodes 1-3 will be directed by Anthony Philipson (Day of the Jackal, The Last Kingdom) and 4-5 will be directed by Jennifer Sheridan (Extraordinary, Rules of the Game). Chrissy Skinns (A Spy Among Friends, Elizabeth is Missing) is Producer. It is produced in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

‘Malpractice’ season one had the most watched launch episode of a new drama on ITV1 in 2023 with 6.7m viewers based on 28-day viewing and has sold to more than 70 countries. The compelling first series of the cat and mouse thriller, starred Niamh Algar, Helen Behan, Jordan Kouamé and James Purefoy, and debuted on ITV in April 2023 with critics praising the series for its “intricate plot”, “powerful authenticity” and describing it as “a breakneck thriller.”

“I’m thrilled to be bringing back a second series of Malpractice,” adds Executive Producer and Writer, Grace Ofori-Attah. “This time, I’m excited to be delving into the world of Psychiatry, my medical specialty, with an incredible cast led by Tom Hughes, and fantastic crew led by Anthony Philipson. I can’t wait to get started.”

Malpractice‘ Season 2 is filming now and will premiere on ITV1 and be available for streaming on ITVX. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
