‘The Grand Tour: One For The Road’: The Final Special Gets A September Premiere On Prime Video

One last road trip for a trio of idiots in cars

by Dave Elliott

After 22 years together, and 8 years of ‘The Grand Tour’, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond & James May say a final goodbye with one last special – The Grand Tour: One For The Road – premiering this September on Prime Video.

The presenting trio of Clarkson, Hammond, and May announced last November that they were “done” with the format and had filmed their final episodes, saying it had “come to its natural end.” Clarkson later expanded on that, commenting that the outlandish treks had become more challenging when “you’re unfit and fat and old”. After 22 years of car adventures together, they were also struggling to come up with new ideas. “I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,” he continued. “We’ve done everything you can do with a car. When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.”

This last adventure sees the trio return to where their ‘Grand Tour’ specials began, with a road trip from Zimbabwe and Botswana. “They wanted to go a bit back to 2005 or 2006,” commented producer Andy Wilman at the Edinburgh TV Festival this week. “Leave the dynamite and just go with shit old cars.”

Wilman also added that they’ve opted not to go out with some big, over-the-top stunt, and it’s much more lowkey… but will be emotional “Not much happens, I would say. Anyone who thinks they’re going to get Avengers: Endgame is going to be disappointed because it is deliberately gentle. But their camaraderie is next level.” He continues “They say goodbye better than any presenters could ever say goodbye, because they’re so close. They can take the piss out of one another and then be emotional as well. It’s quite weepy.”

The Grand Tour: One For The Road‘ premieres Friday, 13th September 2024 on Prime Video UK and worldwide.
