‘Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler Set As Lead In ‘Einstein’ Pilot For CBS

by Dave Elliott

‘Criminal Minds’ star Matthew Gray Gubler has landed the title role in ‘Einstein’, a pilot for CBS from the team behind ‘Monk’, based on an original German series.

The dramedy follows the brilliant but directionless great-grandson of Albert Einstein. He is a smart, smooth-talking, comfortably tenured professor, but when he gets in trouble with the law, he is pressed by the police to help a local detective solve their most puzzling cases.

“Lew Einstein” (Gubler) is a popular professor at Princeton… that is when he actually shows up for class… Irreverent and misguided, Lew’s genius and famous name weighs heavily on him, but using his gift to help solve homicides may, finally, offer his life some direction and purpose.

Gubler is well known for playing another science guy, Spencer Reid, in ‘Criminal Minds’. Whilst he was the only full-time original cast member to stay for the entire 15 seasons of the original run, he did not return for the more recent ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ continuation/spin-off. His other projects include the Hulu series ‘Dollface’, and has become a children’s book author and illustrator.

The original German series was written by Martin Ritzenhoff and Matthias Dinter, based on their 2015 film. The US version is being developed by ‘Monk’ creator/EP, Andy Breckman, alongside ‘Monk’ director/EP Randy Zisk. Tariq Jalil exec produces for Intrigue, alongside Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia and Laura Beetz for Seven One Studios International. CBS Television Studios serves as the studio.

‘Einstein’ is currently classed as “in development”, but we’ll let you know if it moves forward.
