Netflix Cancels ‘That 90s Show’ After 2 Seasons

by Dave Elliott

That 90s Show is not getting any older, as Netflix announces the comedy has been cancelled after 2 Seasons on the streaming service.

A continuation of ‘That 70s Show’, the series picked up two decades later, as Kitty and Red Forman welcomed a new generation of teenagers into their basement when their granddaughter Leia decided to spend time with them in Wisconsin.

The series starred Kurtwood Smith as Red, Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty, Callie Haverda as Leia Forman, Ashley Aufderheide as Gwen, Maxwell Donovan as Nate, Mace Coronel as Jay, Reyn Doi as Ozzie, Sam Morelos as Nikki and Andrea Anders as Sherri. It also features a number of guest spots from the original ‘That ’70s Show’ cast including Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, Topher Grace, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.

The cancellation doesn’t come as a huge shock, given the second season, which was split into two parts, only managed to break into the Netflix Top 10 once in its first full week of release of part one. Part two failed to chart entirely. Personally, I found the show enjoyable enough, but these sort of straight up multi-cam sitcoms can really struggle to find an audience on streaming services.

Posting on social media, star Kurtwood Smith confirmed the news, adding “I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all.” He did give a slight glimmer of hope to fans, saying that they would be shopping the sitcom elsewhere “because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school.” Whilst I’m not convinced anyone is likely to bite, I do think it might fare better on traditional network TV.

The series came from ‘That ’70s Show’ co-creators Bonnie and Terry Turner, alongside their daughter Lindsey Turner, and showrunner/executive producer Gregg Mettler. Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner, Jessica Goldstein and Chrissy Pietrosh also executive produced. The series was based on ‘That ’70s Show’ created by Bonnie Turner & Terry Turner & Mark Brazill.

Both seasons of ‘That 90s Show‘ can be found on Netflix.
