‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Trailer Lands, Coming To Cinemas In May 2025

Sony and Columbia Pictures have released a trailer for ‘Karate Kid: Legends’, which kicks off a brand-new chapter of the popular franchise, starring Ben Wang, Jackie Chan and the original “Karate Kid”, Ralph Macchio.

After a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang – ‘American Born Chinese’) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere.

When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.

The film is an interesting way of merging the previous incarnations of ‘The Karate Kid’ into one timeline. It follows on from the original three films and the ‘Cobra Kai‘ TV series, but also mixes in Jackie Chan’s “Mr. Han” from the 2010 remake which starred Jaden Smith in the title role. That film was actually based around “Kung Fu” as opposed to “Karate”, so using that as a plot device in the new movie is an interesting idea.

Alongside Wang, Chan and Macchio, the film also features Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, and Wyatt Oleff.

It’s directed by Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World, I Am Not Okay with This) with a script by Rob Lieber, based on ‘The Karate Kid’ by Robert Mark Kamen. Karen Rosenfelt is the producer, with Jenny Hinkey and Ralph Macchio exec producing. The score comes from our old friend Dominic Lewis (The Man in the High Castle, DuckTales, The Fall Guy, Monsters At Work).

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ is set to land in UK cinemas from Friday, 30th May 2025.
