After their huge success adapting ‘Outlander’, Sony has picked up the rights to adapt another popular book series, the ‘From Blood and Ash’ novels by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
The novels follow Poppy, chosen from birth to usher in a new era, her life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.
The fate of the entire kingdom rests on Poppy’s shoulders – a burden she’s not certain she even wants to bear. The Maiden has a heart, a soul, and desires of her own… When Hawke, a golden-eyed guard sworn to protect her until her Ascension, steps into her life, duty and destiny collide with yearning and need. He stirs her anger, challenges her beliefs, and lures her toward the forbidden.
Abandoned by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom rises from the ashes, driven by violence and vengeance to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs. As the shadow of the cursed draws ever closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is just begins to fade. Poppy teeters on the edge – not only of losing her heart and being deemed unworthy by the gods but also of losing her life, as every blood-stained thread binding her world begins to fray.
There are currently five novels in Armentrout’s ‘Blood and Ash’ book series, with a sixth, ‘The Primal of Blood and Bone‘, due in June 2025, so there is plenty of source material for Sony to work with. Deadline, who broke the news, suggests that, like ‘Outlander’, should this be a hit, there is also potential to expand it into a franchise, as are also four ‘Flesh and Fire’ prequel books which they could use for a spin-off.
Jennifer L. Armentrout is an American award-winning No. 1 New York Times and International Bestselling author, who writes young adult paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary romance. Outside of her ‘Blood and Ash’ adult fantasy series, she also writes Adult and New Adult contemporary and paranormal romance under the name J. Lynn.
‘From Blood and Ash’ is currently classed as “in development” at Sony, but we’ll let you know if we hear more.
