Netflix has released the official trailer for ‘The Electric State’, a new movie from The Russo Brothers, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, and Stanley Tucci.
In an alt-history version of the 1990s, the emergence of robotic artificial intelligence led to an enormous war between man and machine… which the robots lost… and were forced onto 200,000 miles of secure territory known as “The Electric State”. Years later, an uneasy peace has settled in – but it may not last for long.
The movie follows a young woman, Michelle, (Millie Bobby Brown) who embarks on a perilous journey across the robot-ravaged US to find her missing brother, accompanied by a mysterious toy robot and a roguish smuggler (Chris Pratt). Together, they’ll unravel a mechanical conspiracy at the centre of the American heartland.
The movie is an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name, although it isn’t a direct adaptation. The script comes from Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America films, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame) and reteams them with MCU directors Anthony & Joe Russo. The film takes the story concept and runs with it, expanding the world while remaining true to the emotional threads Stålenhag weaved into his own work. Whilst that might make some fans of the graphic novel winch a little, Stålenhag himself seems very happy with how the Russos have handled it.
“I’m blown away by the movie,” Stålenhag said in an interview with Netflix. “It was an amazing experience watching things that I have drawn come to life this way. What resonated most with me was the emotional core of the movie, which is the need for family. Even though the movie has changed genre from the book a bit, that main core is still the same and has been expanded on beautifully.”
Alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, and Stanley Tucci, the movie also stars Ke Huy Quan (Loki, Everything Everywhere All at Once), Woody Norman (The White Princess, Poldark), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, The Gentlemen, The Mandalorian), and Martin Klebba (Pirates of the Caribbean films).
The voice cast for the robots is equally impressive, including Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie,
Brian Cox, Billy Bob Thornton, Hank Azaria, Jenny Slate, Alan Tudyk, Colman Domingo, Rob Gronkowski and Billy Gardell.
If you want to know more about ‘The Electric State‘, some of the cast and crew appeared on a panel at MCM Comic Con earlier this year, which gave a bit more insight into the movie, and also introduced some of the characters. You can see clips from that panel in the video below.
‘The Electric State’ film premieres Friday, 14th March 2025 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
