ITV Reveals “First Look” At ‘Malpractice’ Season 2, Premiering Spring

by Dave Elliott

ITV has revealed a set of “first look” photos for Season 2 of its critically acclaimed medical thriller Malpractice which is set to return this Spring on ITV1 and ITVX.

Written and created by Grace Ofori-Attah, the new series sees the return of Helen Behan (The Virtues, Elizabeth Is Missing) and Jordan Kouamé (Scoop) as Dr. Norma Callahan and Dr. George Adjei of the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU), who are once again called in to investigate a doctor accused of malpractice.

When on-call psychiatric registrar Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes) finds himself caught between an anxious new mother’s postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, no one could predict the tragic outcome.

Norma Callahan and George Adjei of the MIU are called in to investigate Dr Ford’s actions. His personal life is messy and his colleagues may find him arrogant, but Dr Ford appears committed to his vulnerable patients. Yet what appears to be a series of bad choices by one doctor spreads beyond the psychiatric unit to a hospital seemingly at war with itself. Is Dr Ford a doctor with a God complex, or a victim himself?

With the investigation closing in, can Dr Ford save his already fragile career from a string of apparently damning mistakes? And can the MIU uncover the truth of what happened despite fierce opposition from all sides?

Joining Behan and Kouamé for the second season are Tom Hughes (Victoria, The English), Selin Hizli (Am I Being Unreasonable, Mum), Zoë Telford (Sherlock, The Lazarus Project), along with Hannah McClean (Blue Lights, Josh), Seraphina Beh (Polite Society, Top Boy), Rick Warden (The Jetty, Happy Valley) and Ace Bhatti (Line of Duty, Bohemian Rhapsody).

“I couldn’t be more delighted to be playing James and helping bring to life Grace’s pertinent and important piece, which stopped me in my tracks when I read it,” said Hughes. “I hope the audience, when they see it, are equally as gripped and engaged by it, as I was.”

‘Malpractice’ was recommissioned for a second series by ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, and is produced by award-winning production company World Productions, part of ITV Studios. Series Two is written and created by Grace Ofori-Attah (Playing Nice, Grace Under Pressure, In The Long Run) who will serve as executive producer alongside Simon Heath (Line of Duty, Save Me, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Anne, The Gathering), Roderick Seligman and Emma Luffingham (Showtrial, Karen Pirie) for World Productions. Episode 3 is co-written by Hannah K. Richards.

‘Malpractice’ season one had the most watched launch episode of a new drama on ITV1 in 2023 with 6.7m viewers based on 28-day viewing and has sold to more than 70 countries.
