‘Trinity‘, a brand new Netflix thriller series from acclaimed writer Jed Mercurio, has officially been greenlit, and it brings together a powerhouse duo as Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki) and Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Citadel) are set to lead the cast.
The eight-part series follows Commander Katherine Decker (Mbatha-Raw), a heroic Naval officer serving as second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, one of the most formidable nuclear submarines in the world. Her world is turned upside down when she becomes involved with the seemingly principled and charismatic Secretary of Defence, Webb Preston (Madden). But as Decker digs deeper, she begins to suspect that Preston may be hiding something far more dangerous beneath the surface.
According to the official synopsis, Preston is “a man whose background in technology makes him unlike most politicians,” with an edge that poses a threat in more ways than one.
The series marks a highly anticipated reunion between Mercurio and Madden, who previously collaborated on the hugely successful BBC thriller Bodyguard, which earned Madden a Golden Globe and received an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series. Mercurio is known for creating gripping, high-stakes dramas including Line of Duty, Bodies, and Critical.
Mercurio will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner through his HTM (Hat Trick Mercurio) banner, alongside executive producers Jimmy Mulville (HTM) and Wendy Mericle (Willow, Arrow). Michael Cuesta (Dexter, Homeland) is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes. The series is produced by 20th Television.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw has become a standout presence on both the big and small screen, recently headlining Apple TV+’s Surface, with previous credits including The Morning Show, Black Mirror: San Junipero, and Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Her film roles include Concussion, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, A Wrinkle in Time, and Misbehaviour.
Richard Madden has been a consistent force in high-profile dramas, from his breakout as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, to his Marvel role in Eternals, and blockbuster films like 1917 and Rocketman.
