Is It Cake? has been one of the major surprise hits on Netflix over the last few years, with the streaming platform proving once again that it has an eye for unique offerings. The baking show tasks contestants with creating realistic cakes designed to look like other objects, with judges then having to guess which one is the cake.
There have already been three seasons of the show and a holiday special, highlighting how popular the reality show is. With fans waiting for news of a fourth season, we decided to look into where the show come from and how it became so popular.
Netflix Baking Show Has Proved Incredibly Popular
It’s remarkable how Netflix manages to find relatively untapped resources and turn them into hit shows. Is It Cake? began as an internet meme, but the streaming service ran with it and turned it into one of its biggest reality series.
The offering was conceived by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, with Mikey Day serving as the host. The series also features celebrity judges who add to the broader appeal. Initially, Netflix may not have expected such huge things for the show, but it quickly became a viral hit. This led to Is It Cake, Too? in 2022, and Is It Cak3? in 2024. There was also the Is It Cake? Holiday Edition, which features nine of the best bakers from the first three seasons.
Along with pulling in high viewing figures for the platform, Is It Cake? has also been met with critical acclaim. Indeed, it has even been nominated for awards, including the Best Culinary Show at the 2022 Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards.
Tapping Into Widespread Interest in All Things Sweet
There are countless reasons why Is It Cake? works so well, but the fact that it includes so many sweet treats has to be a major draw. There are various other dessert-themed offerings on television that bring in large crowds, such as Nailed It! and The Great British Bake Off. Is It Cake? simply taps into this readymade audience and gives them a slightly different twist on the standard proceedings.
Sweet things are generally visually appealling and bring to mind pleasant tastes and smells, making them a reliable theme for drawing crowds in the wider entertainment landscape. In the mobile gaming industry, for instance, some of the most successful titles ever are candy-themed. Elsewhere, in the iGaming sector, the Sweet Bonanza demo and full versions have proven popular enough, with their bright colours and eye-catching symbols, to where the game has frequently been paired with free spins bonuses as part of major site promotional campaigns. Many films and advertisements have equally leaned into cinematography that exaggerates the visual appeal of desserts as a way to influence viewer reactions. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, but that doesn’t make it any less delectable.
Part of the appeal of sweet things in entertainment is in their colourful aesthetics, and the creations in Is It Cake? are always easy on the eye. This way, viewers get to enjoy the hard work that goes into the desserts while imagining what it would be like to eat them.
Even though baking shows are abundant in the modern age, Is It Cake? still manages to stand out from the crowd thanks to its unique premise.
Is It Cake? has not yet been renewed for a 5th Season following the “Holiday” season (aka Season 4) in November 2024. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
