‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ Gets August Premiere Date on U&Drama

by Dave Elliott

A sweeping tale of betrayal, revenge, and redemption is heading to the UK this August, as The Count of Monte Cristo makes its premiere on U&Drama. This epic new series brings Alexandre Dumas’s beloved 19th-century novel to life in an eight-part historical adventure packed with drama, intrigue and high-seas peril.

Adapted for the screen in grand cinematic style, the show stars Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) as Edmond Dantes, a wrongfully imprisoned sailor who rises from the depths of despair to become a mysterious and powerful aristocrat. Jeremy Irons (House of Gucci) plays Abbe Faria, a fellow prisoner whose mentorship sets Dantes on his path to vengeance.

Set against the backdrop of post-Napoleonic France, the story follows Edmond Dantes, a young and honest seaman whose life is upended by a cruel conspiracy. Falsely accused of treason and incarcerated without trial, Edmond is locked away in the infamous Château d’If. Over the years, he endures brutal isolation and plots a daring escape, re-emerging with a new identity and unimaginable wealth.

As the enigmatic Count of Monte Cristo, he begins to enact a masterful revenge on those who betrayed him, manipulating high society with charm, intellect, and cold calculation.

In the opening episode, a violent storm at sea claims the life of the ship’s captain, forcing Edmond to take command and bring the vessel safely back to Marseille. There, he reunites with his beloved Mercedes, played by Ana Girardot (The Wages of Fear), and is swiftly promoted to captain. Their future seems bright as the couple prepares for marriage.

But joy turns to treachery as envy brews among those around him. Fellow sailor Danglars (Blake Ritson, The Gilded Age) and a jealous Fernand hatch a plot to destroy Edmond. A secret letter, entrusted to Edmond by the late captain, holds dangerous political implications—enough to get him arrested at his own betrothal feast. Without trial or explanation, he is cast into the dark dungeons of Château d’If by the ambitious prosecutor Villefort.

With rich production values, a gripping plot, and a timeless central character, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ promises an emotionally charged and visually arresting retelling of a classic revenge saga.

The Count of Monte Cristo’ premieres Saturday, 2nd August 2025 at 9:00 pm on U&Drama. All episodes will also be available to stream on U from the same day.
