What happens when you take Josh Gad (Frozen, Wonder Man) and Andrew Rannells (Girls, Black Monday), throw them into the TV multiverse and let them run wild? Hulu might let us find out, as the streamer is developing ‘Stay Tuned’, a new comedy series based on the delightfully bonkers 1992 cult classic movie that starred John Ritter and Pam Dawber.
In this updated take, Gad and Rannells would find themselves trapped on the wrong side of the screen, forced to survive and navigate their way through TV’s most binge-worthy worlds. Considering the original film had the leads zapped into parodies of everything from Wayne’s World to Three’s Company, we’re hoping this series goes equally wild. Just imagine Gad and Rannells popping up in your favourite dramas, sitcoms and reality shows.
The project comes from Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, A Beautiful Mind), Jordan Cahan (Black Monday), and Greg Lessans, with Cahan serving as showrunner. Gad and Rannells will also executive produce alongside Goldsman, Lessans, James G. Robinson, David Robinson and Aaron Semmel.
For Gad and Rannells, this is a proper on-screen reunion after years of being Broadway besties since The Book of Mormon (and more recently Gutenberg! The Musical!). “For over a decade Andrew and I have been the Laverne and Shirley of our generation (according to our mothers),” joked Gad, while Rannells added: “Personally, Josh and I have always reminded me more of a Sam and Diane or at times a Cagney and Lacey, but either way, I am thrilled we are reuniting once again.” It also marks a reunion between Rannells and Cahan, who previously worked together on Showtime’s Black Monday.
At this stage, ‘Stay Tuned’ is in development at Hulu, so there’s no guarantee it will move forward to series. With this cast and concept, we’re hoping it makes it to our screens.
