Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for ‘The Diplomat’ Season 3, along with news that the hit political drama (with liberal doses of dark comedy) will return this October. The footage also reveals the arrival of Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, The Handmaid’s Tale), who joins the cast as Todd Penn, husband of President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
The teaser gives fans a glimpse of the fallout from Season 2’s shocking finale. With President Rayburn (Michael McKean) dead and Grace Penn now in charge, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) faces the nightmare of stepping into a political role she never wanted, while her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) pushes harder than ever to land her the vice presidency.
“A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed,” Kate says in the trailer, setting the stage for a turbulent new season filled with uneasy alliances and dangerous secrets.
Whitford, who reunites with his West Wing co-star Janney, couldn’t resist joining the series. “I was thrilled when I heard that Debora [Cahn, creator, showrunner, and executive producer] was interested in me doing something,” he said. “I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too. It’s an amazing cast.”
Season 3: What’s next for Kate Wyler?
Showrunner Debora Cahn promises a major shake-up: “Season 3 flips the chessboard. In Season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.” With Grace Penn in power, Kate’s marriage under strain, and her friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) growing more complex, her next steps could have global consequences.
Debora Cahn is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. She returns to Season 3 alongside executive producers Janice Williams, Keri Russell, and Alex Graves. The show has also already been renewed for Season 4!
‘The Diplomat’ Season 3 premieres Thursday, 16th October 2025 on Netflix.
