Sacred Heart is officially back in business, and now it is truly a reunion. Judy Reyes (Scrubs, High Potential) will reprise her iconic role as Carla Espinosa in ABC’s upcoming ‘Scrubs’ revival. The project was greenlit earlier this summer with Zach Braff (Garden State), Donald Faison (Clueless), and Sarah Chalke (Firefly Lane) already signed on, but Reyes’ return had been in question due to her commitments as a series regular on ABC’s hit crime drama ‘High Potential’.
That scheduling clash has now been resolved, with special arrangements made to allow Reyes to don her scrubs once more. She will appear in a recurring capacity, marking a long-awaited reunion of the original Sacred Heart core. Reyes played Carla, the sharp-witted and big-hearted head nurse, across the first eight seasons of the original series, becoming a fan favourite and earning two ALMA Awards.
The new ‘Scrubs’ follows JD and Turk reuniting to scrub in together for the first time in years. Medicine has evolved, interns are a different breed, and Sacred Heart has new faces. However, the legendary bromance at the heart of the series is still intact. Expect old friends, fresh chaos, and a blend of heartfelt and absurd moments that made the original a classic.
Bill Lawrence, creator of the original series, returns as executive producer alongside longtime collaborators Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, who will also serve as showrunners. Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer executive produce for Lawrence’s Doozer Productions, with the series coming from 20th Television.
Reyes’ balancing act with ‘High Potential’ is worth highlighting. On that series, adapted from the French hit Haut Potentiel Intellectuel, she plays Lieutenant Selena Soto, a forceful but respected leader in Major Crimes. With High Potential heading into its second season, her dual presence across two high-profile ABC projects cements her as one of the network’s busiest stars.‘High Potential’ Season 2 premieres Wednesday, 17th September 2025 on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland, following its Tuesday night debut on ABC in the USA.
The original Scrubs ran from 2001 to 2010, first on NBC before finishing on ABC. Over nine seasons, it collected 17 Emmy nominations, two wins, and a legion of fans who have kept the Sacred Heart spirit alive ever since.
The ‘Scrubs’ revival is expected to premiere in 2026 on ABC in the US, with the UK launch expected on Disney+. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you will be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
